LG External dvd burner not reading cds

Hello, I bought a external super multi dvd rewriter about a week ago ive been busy so havent had time to hook it up. so last night i hooked it up and put in the cd it came with and its not reading it or any other cd. Can somebody PLEASE HELP?

I also just bought an LG super multi DVD rewriter (LG GE20NU11) from Amazon UK and have exactly the same problem. I spoke to LG and they told me the unit is faulty, but I'm not so sure. Numerous Google searches have brought up nothing. This is all very strange.
