Wifi troubles

Hello,
I need to find out how i can get my laptop wifi working its a windows XP and it has a wifi receiver on the left bottom side. I keep pressing the button that has te wifi icon on it but nothing happens. does anyone have any suggestions.

Are you holding down the Fn button as you're pressing the WiFi key?
