Normaly a crossover cable is used between two COMPUTERS. But is sometimes it's needed between a MODEM and a COMPUTER or a MODEM and a ROUTER.
You need to consult the manual for each component to see which is required.
A large number of late model Routers are constructed in a way that allows the use of either type cable.
I would try a straight thru cable from the laptop to either the Modem or Router.
