Acer notebook and cable network connection

Hello,



My brother, in HI, just sent my mother (in WI) his old Acer notebook. I believe he used a wireless connection but she had cable. She can access the internet through my smart phone BUT she wants to access it at home through cable company. I tried to help but keep getting some message about needing an IP address to connect....

What do I do to set it up so she can use her cable internet service? She has no smartphone and no wireless system or hotspot.
