APC is one of the old-time manufacturers and also makes heavy-duty industrial units. I have three of their home units and have been very satisfied.
For sizing, select a unit rated two to three times what your computer actually uses. For instance a tower computer with five disks, 24inch LCD monitor, a router and a modem draws 200 to 250 Watts, and a bit more during startup. It is well supplied by a 750VA UPS. A smaller tower computer with one drive and a 22inch monitor draws 150 to 200 Watts.
Notice the computer load is in Watts, but a UPS is rated in Volt-Amps with a power factor of around 0.6. This gives the 750VA UPS an actual load capacity of 450 Watts, and this decreases as the battery ages. With this sizing, you can expect 10 to 20 minutes of run time on battery power. With light usage, expect to replace the battery every 18 months.
