Need help to find sites ports or ???

Hello,
here's the deal, would love some help. installed a router and thought life was great. then during downloading i noticed that it was slower than a turtle. i installed utorrent and found that a particular port wasn't open...so i configured my router. all is good again BUT now am looking to install AVG from download.com; my problem seems to be that again its slower than a turtle if it even comes close to installing; sometimes it just pretends to download. so where on sites do i find the number that i need to open any ports? if that is my problem! thanks for your time!!! ;)
