I cannot connect my lappy and desktop

Hello,

i cannot connect my laptop and desktop running windows 7 using ethernet cables and a switch. It gets connected directly without using switch but when i use switch it doesnt gets conctd. while pinging it says destination host not reachable. please help

I cross checked the cables both of them r good and my switch is also working fine. please help.

Do you also have a Router in the network? Because you need one.
