Hello,
depending on what your requirements are will determine the best course.
I recommend a domain environment.
You could move your email to Office 365 and that eliminates one thing. If you have an Exchange server then you should set up Outlook Anywhere and set up remote branches to point to this instead of locally.
Then I would get site to site VPN working on the routers to connect all branches to the head office.
If the branches have a small amount of users then I would edit the HOST file so that the host name for the server at HQ can be resolved.
If they're large then I would install a domain controller at each site and set up replication between them all.
