Hello Mo,
Have you tried to locate the external device in the Disk management menu? You can go there by going firstly on the Computer management option in Start menu. Does the player have a driver on a CD coming with it? If it does, you have to manually install it, especially if you work with a little bit obsolete OS like Windows XP. You could also update the driver of your USB controller device in the Device manager.
Does the player work on another PC with another OS? If you haven't tried, plug it in order to see would it get recognized or not there.
