How to run downloaded movies

I have Chromecast showing on my TV and despite a few short videos, can't seem to cast content from a hard drive via my laptop to the TV. I've tried the Control+O funtion, which opens the content in a new tab. I then left-clicked to 'cast to a device', but it's not recognizing my device there. Is there a time lag, should I reboot, or am I missing something?

I'm trying to run downloaded movies from an external hard drive. I can't figure out how to get them to run on my computer and then cast them onto my tv. I've installed VLC Media Player as someone suggested, but still am stumped.

What you need is a free media player.

Download and install VLC Media Player (very popular)

https://ccm.net/downloads/video/4557-vlc-media-player/

Once the video is downloaded, use open with VLC

Thank you. I downloaded the VLC Media Player successfully, but still am unable to cast a downloaded movie from an external hard drive to my tv.
