Conditional formatting based on another cell?

Hi everyone! I'm trying to finish my financial sheet to work out where I am for this year. I need it so that when I type in the word "yes", It shows the cell to the left as yellow. I've tried so many formulas and so many help pages without luck! Please help me?..
Im on Mac Excel 2011.

Hi JTTaylor92,

Select D3.
Open conditional formatting and choose to use formula.
=$E3="Yes" apply format.
Used range:=$D$3:$D$14

Not sure though, if this is any different for using a mac.
