Screen goes off every few seconds

I own a dell laptop with windows 8.it was working fine fr the last 1.5 years. But Now the screen is turning off like every few seconds......I can't even type the password to get into the desktop.
Whenever the screen goes off I have press a key to wake the screen and it goes off again and again. Is this a major issue .......help me guys!!

Hi will the issue repeat if you use an external monitor?
