This article will attempt to simplify how to dial an American phone number from any part of the world, whether it be Australia, the UK, India, or Belgium. It will also cover the country codes and area codes that you will need. Here's how to call someone in the USA.
N.B. These tips should work even when calling from or trying to access a mobile number.
What is the US country code number?
The international country code for the United States is +1 (001). This country code is needed each time a caller from outside the United States attempts to connect with someone who has a US number.
What is the US country phone number format?
When calling from abroad, most callers have to follow a specific format, which looks like this: exit code + country code + area code + phone number. In this article, we show you exact examples so you can call the USA when needed.
How to call someone in the USA on WhatsApp?
- Remove all the leading 0s from the phone number.
- Start with the sign +.
- Add 1, so the number looks like +1 XXXXXX, where XXXXXX is the phone number you want to call.
- After the 1, add the area code - you will find the full list below.
- For example, if you call someone in Maine, the number should look like +1 207 XXXXXXX.
USA Area Codes
An area code is 3-number prefix that indicates from which area of the United States a caller is communicating. The number of area codes designated to a state is dependent on the size and distribution of its residents. For example, lower-population states such as Idaho have fewer area codes, while more densely populated states such as New York have many more area codes.

How to call the USA from Europe/the UK?
If you're calling a United States phone number from other parts of the world, you must dial your country's exit code before the applicable country code, area code, and phone number.
Whether dialing from a mobile phone or landline, a caller from the United Kingdom or from a number in any European country would have to dial 00 1 (if dialing from a mobile phone, you can enter a + instead of the 00). For example, if you are calling from France to a phone in Maine, you should dial 00 1 207 ### ### ####. 00 is UK's exit code, while 1 is USA's country code, and 207 is the area code for Maine. How to call the USA from India?
To call the USA from India:
- Delete all the unnecessary leading 0s.
- Start the number with 00 (exit code for India).
- Follow with 1 (US country code).
- Add the US area code (check the list in the How to call someone in the USA on WhatsApp section).
- Add the phone number.
- Example: 00 1 207 XXXXXX, where XXXXXX is the phone number.
How to call the USA from Mexico?
Calling the USA from Mexico follows the same rules as for other countries:
- Type 00 (Mexico exit code).
- Then type 1 (USA country code).
- Then enter the area code (see list above).
- Complete with the phone number.
- Example: for a number located in Maine, enter 00 1 207 XXXXXX.
How to call the USA from Australia?

How to call the USA from Canada?
If you're calling a United States number from Canada, all you have to do is simply dial the country code 1, followed by the area code + 7-digit number (note that the + signs need not be dialed).
How to call abroad from the USA?
If you are in the United States and trying to call someone outside the US, dial 011 (this is the international access code), followed by the applicable country code and 7 or 8-digit phone number. If a phone number begins with 0, the 0 should not be dialed.
