Well, if you trust your friend, then whatsapp support is your next step. Contact whatsapp directly.

Can you see anyones last online? If yes, perhaps your friend is mistaken, or notbtelling you they did hide it! Take it up with whatsapp if tou can see others but not theirs. Have fun with that!
