Hello,
I purchased Dell Inspiron 5558 (with Windows 8) just two ago (Nov 2015). Everything was working fine. However, recently I started to notice an annoying thing with the function keys F11 and F12 for reducing and increasing the brightness respectively.

Without using the Fn key (next to Windows key), if I hit F11 it was reducing the brightness and F12 was increasing the brightness earlier - as expected. Now, sometimes, the laptop monitor goes to sleep mode the moment I hit F11 or F12. I have to press the power button again to wake it up. This behavior is very off and on and not consistent.

Did any settings get changed? How to fix this? Please help.

FYI - all the video drivers are up to date.

Thanks,

Well, the hardware is taking the key press as the power button press. go to power options, and look for "what happens when I press power button", and remove the sleep action from it. You then need to unplug all power and either clean out the keyboard with canned air, or vacuum out the keyboard as you have dust or debris causing physical issues. Remove all power and turn off prior to cleaning!
