This Trick Keeps the Bubbles in Opened Carbonated Drinks

Want to preserve the fizz in your opened carbonated drinks? Every kitchen has a simple product that can prevent you from losing those precious bubbles, whether in bottles or cans!

Sparkling water, soda, cider, beer, sparkling wine—many of us regularly enjoy these fizzy drinks with family, friends, or colleagues during meals, aperitifs, or festive events. But we all face the same problem when it comes to storing an opened bottle or can: how can we keep the bubbles that make these drinks so delightful? This is especially challenging if we want to enjoy them several days after opening.

There are several well-known techniques involving various accessories. For example, there's the old trick of placing a spoon in the neck of the bottle—a grandmother's method that works with varying success. Or you could use a special stopper equipped with a lever or a mechanical device to maintain the pressure in the bottle, preventing the precious bubbles from escaping.

But there's an even simpler and more economical solution you probably already have in your kitchen: cling film. When properly placed over the opening, this transparent, stretchable plastic film ensures an excellent seal, keeping your drinks fizzy for several days. The process is very straightforward.

How to Keep the Bubbles in Open Carbonated Drinks

Just cut a piece of cling film, position it over the opening, carefully stretch it over the neck of the bottle or the top of the can, and gently fold it over the sides to prevent any gas—and bubbles—from escaping. And that's it! Easy, right?

To further enhance the seal, you can press the film tightly onto the bottle or can with a rubber band. Try this method the next time you have opened fizzy drinks, and you'll see that they retain their bubbles for days after opening. If you don't finish the drink in one go, you can simply reseal it with the same film.

However, be cautious: make sure to use proper food-grade cling film, made of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and certified for food use. Avoid using general-purpose plastic wraps, as they may contain harmful chemicals like phthalates or bisphenol A, which are classified as endocrine disruptors. Use this trick when the bottle is open but you don't want to drink anymore but still want to keep all the bubbles.
