Messenger Answering Machine: Leave a Video Message for Friends Who Don't Pick Up

Messenger is rolling out a host of new features with its latest update! Highlights include an answering machine, AI-generated wallpapers, improved call quality, and Siri integration.

Although Messenger once enjoyed its moment of glory—thanks to its integration with Facebook and Instagram—Meta's instant messaging service is starting to show its age. It faces tough competition, particularly from WhatsApp, Meta's other messaging platform, which remains hugely popular. In response, Meta has been stepping up its game with frequent updates to keep Messenger relevant.

This past April, Messenger introduced a series of enhancements, including the ability to send HD photos, create shared albums in group chats, and share large files. Now, Meta is back with another update, announced in a blog post on Wednesday, November 20. This new rollout brings a mix of fun and functional features, most notably a voicemail-like feature for missed calls.

Messenger Answering Machine: A Game-Changer for Video Calls

The standout addition is the answering machine, which allows users to leave audio or video messages when their calls go unanswered. To use this feature, simply press the "Record a message" button. Depending on the type of call—voice or video—the app lets you leave a message in the corresponding format. Apple introduced a similar feature for FaceTime last year, but Messenger's implementation is a welcome addition for its user base.

Another upgrade enhances video call experiences. Messenger now lets users add custom backgrounds, generated by Meta AI. To try it out, click the effects icon in the video call sidebar, select "Backgrounds," and describe the image you want in a text query.

Improved Call Quality and Siri Integration

Meta has also focused on improving call quality. Calls now feature ambient noise cancellation and voice isolation for clearer audio. Additionally, HD video calling is enabled by default for Wi-Fi calls, and you can activate the feature for 4G or 5G calls in the settings.

For iOS users, Messenger now integrates with Siri. You can use Apple's voice assistant to send messages or make calls, offering a hands-free experience.

When Are These Features Available?

Some updates, like call optimization, are already live, while others—such as voice and video messaging—are rolling out gradually. Either way, these updates aim to make Messenger more user-friendly and competitive in today's crowded messaging app market.
