Google Maps Could Delete Your Data: Take Action Soon to Avoid Losing It

Upcoming changes to Google Maps may result in the loss of valuable information unless you act quickly. Here's what you need to know and do to safeguard your data.

Google Maps is an essential app for navigating daily life, helping users find points of interest and plan routes. One of its most convenient features is the Timeline, which shows your search and location history. According to Forbes, this feature is now device specific and linked to the account logged into Google Maps. This change was introduced earlier this year.

Users must update their settings by May 18, 2025, to back up their previous location data using the web version of Google Maps. If no action is taken, all saved locations and routes will be deleted, and the Timeline feature will be disabled, even on devices where location history was previously turned off.

How to Save Your Data

  • Update the App: Ensure you're using version 11.106 or later. Update Google Maps via your device's app store if needed.
  • Follow On-Screen Instructions: After updating, open the app. A notification will guide you through backing up your search and location history. Simply follow the steps and confirm by tapping Done.
  • Choose Your Backup Settings: Your data will be stored based on the selected settings. To import this data to another device, enable backups:
  1. Tap your profile photo in the app.
  2. Select My Timeline.
  3. Tap the cloud icon in the top-right corner.
  4. Choose Do not auto-delete activities to disable auto-deletion.
  • Finalize Backup: On the Backup Data screen, select Backup Data and confirm with Yes.

Avoid Losing Your Data

If you don't adjust your settings by the specified deadline, you risk losing all your Timeline data, including visited places and recorded routes. Keep an eye on emails and notifications for further reminders to protect your information.

  • Verify Your Account: Ensure you're using the correct Google account linked to your location history. Switching accounts or devices may result in lost access.
  • Export Data: Use Google Takeout to download your location history for safekeeping or migration.
  • Check Notifications: Look for emails or app alerts about the changes to ensure you meet the deadline.
