Connect Laptop directly with LAN socket via Ethernet cable?

Hello,

I live in a student residence. Every room in this building has a LAN socket , is it possible to connect the LAN socket directly to the laptop via Ethernet cable without having a router in between ? I tried but the internet does not work , do you have to change something in the settings ?

most schools do not allow you to use a Router. So I doubt you need one.

The school should provide specific instructions for attaching or you can contact the computer center.
