Monitor is displaying lines

I have a laptop and desktop at home. For sometime, i use my laptop and had to split my screen using the monitor but recently my laptop packed up and i decided to use the desktop. Each time i turn on the desktop it shows some things on the monitor and then goes blank. I tried using another monitor and it shows. What can be the problem? And how can it be solved?

It's not clear if the problem is with the monitor or the computer. Did the second monitor work OK ?
