Syncing Music

So, I found an ipod nano (4th gen) and want to sync it with my music and delete the other persons. I bought the cord to connect it and downloaded the latest itunes, but neither my computer or itunes will detect the ipod! Will someone tell me what's going on?

You must recharge the ipod, the battery is low!
