I keep turning this on and it keeps turning back off. I save settings every time I have to turn it back on and it just keeps turning off after some period of time.

On a regular basis. I haven't noticed anything in particular like shutting down chromium or rebooting the machine, just it seems like once a week I discover when I do a search that it opens same page, I go to settings and it's turned off again, happens on all my machines. Running chrome and chromium on ubuntu, popos and mint

To open search results in a new tab,

Go to https://www.google.com/preferences
Check Open each selected result in a new browser window.
Click Save.

Then open Chrome Settings and select Advanced. In "Privacy and security", click Site settings > Cookies. Turn ON Allow sites to save and read cookie data and turn OFF Keep local data only until you quit your browser.

If you clear your browsing data, you may delete the cookies that save your settings allowing you to open the search results in a new tab.
