Hi,
Perhaps, because your Internet connection was slowed down / disconnected or experienced packet loss when they tried to send you messages. Check your Internet network and make sure it works properly. Try also using a cable connection to see if that helps.
Regarding Skype itself, update it to the latest version - if you're using an older version and your contacts have a newer one, this may also cause problems between the versions.
