Im going to die if i cant fix this :|

Hello,
i have an acer 5220 laptop and all my documents have disapeared. ive searched my whole computer and cant find them. ive tried doing a system restore but didnt have a backup of the files. how can i get all my documents back?! would doing a system restore back to the factory settings work? and how do you do that without loosing any files?!
