I can't get CoD4 multiplayer to work

Hello,
I have Call of Duty 4 Modern warefare and I have been trying to play online for quite a while...the closest I have got to playing it is selecting what team I am on but then it froze and went back to my desktop and the CoD4 console came up.... and sometimes aswell when the multiplayer game is loading it says Error Server connection has timed out and I don't know why. I have a suitable Graphics card and my computer has a dongle on it to connect to the internet. So what could be going wrong? some one help me please thank you.
I have a Packard bell computer and it is kind of old but it still works fine.
