Hi :)
To install vlc player just go up to the top taskbar and click on
System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager
it asks for your normal user password, not your SuperUser/Root. Then either search tool should find vlc for you. I tend to prefer the "Search" button because it looks in the descriptions as well as in the titles so i can be a lot more vague about what kind of thing i want. In your case it's easy tho, just search for "vlc". Then right-click to install it and finally when you've selected everything you want then click on the "Apply" button.
You wont need to reboot or anything, just find vlc in
Applications - Sound&Video
Note that in linux you don't need to go searching random sites on the internet for who knows what with added viruses included - just use the package managers whenever possible so that you know you are completely safe. The package manager make sure all the dependencies are sorted, downloads, does updates and all that generally taking all the hassle out of getting your programs :)
I suspect the reason you are looking for vlc player is because you haven't yet worked through this guide step-by-step
