what email clien are you using?
what is the file format of the word document you are trying to open.
office xp uses .doc, the latest office 2007 onwards uses .docx
if the file has .docx on end, then as strnnger has suggested you may need to update your office software.
or you can go here to download the link to word viewer.

this will allow you to open the document for reading. but you will not beable to open it for editing as you will need office/word 2007 to edit it.
