Broken laptop screen. LCD monitor.

I have an alienware m15x with a broken screen.
I have a hanspree LCD monitor and I hooked it up via HDMI.
When I try to turn the monitor on the screen remains black.
What am I doing wrong and how can I fix this?

am not sure, but its is possible that when your screen got broken it shortcircuited your graphic card
