Symbols appear in word document

Hello,

I saved a word document onto a flash drive...after saving the document, I took the flash drive out of the computer and then put it back in to check if it saved...symbols appear rather than the actual text in the document. How do I fix this?

can you please mention the version

of office you are having this issue?

it was created with office 2003...and it cant be read with 2003 or 2007
