Yea it is possible.
But your friend is right, your laptop does need a wifi adapter.
Only one of your laptop can use the wifi dongle stick, if the other one has a wifi adapter or built in wifi, it can share it.
Because my pc's router as wifi.
My laptop and my sis laptop both have built in wifi. So we don't need anything. We just connect wireless to the wifi
