Maxtor 160gB doesnt work

Hello,
I have an 160 GB external USB Hard disk. Earlier I had partitioned it into 4. Now when I plug in I can access one partition and the other 3 is just shown as local disk and I cant access any data from them. I don't want to format (as it is asking for) it as I have my data from my PhD work.
Please help.

You can try downloading Partition Wizard from this site:

Then try the Partition recovery option.
