Screen not working

Hello,
I have a Sony Vaio that i got in 2006. The screen is broken but the computer still starts. when i plug it into an external monitor such as a tv or another computer monitor, it goes through the startup process and then the scree goes black and then goes into power save mode if its another monitor or turns off all together if its a tv. How can i get the monitor to stay on so I can transfer the data?

do you have a function key that turns on/off the external monitor port? It should be in the top row of keys and might be marked as LCD/CRT or have an icon for a screen. They normally work with the Fn (function key) to activate the external port.
