Usually when you install ugrade to office, by default program is changed too. You can do this.
1. Right click on the file that you want to open
2. Choose Open with
3. Browse to office 2007 location and choose the WINWORD.EXE. Check the box "always open with..."

I did attempt to choose the option to "Open with". Under preferred programs, it lists Microsoft Word (2003) twice. So, I have tried to browse the program files and when I select WINWORD.EXE, nothing happens. The 2007 program is not added to the list of files in the "Open With" window. Shouldn't it be added?

Are you able to even launch Word 2007 (just as a program )
If you can do that, see if this help
1. Open Word 2007.
2. Click on Office button (that round thing at the top)
3. Click on Word Options
4. Click on Resources
5. Click on Diagnose

I did as noted above.
Compatibility Diagnostic - Ironically it said that it found NO conflicting versions of Microsoft Office applications installed on my computer....
Setup Diagnostic -It repaired all MO installation problems it could find..there was 1, but did not indicate what it was..
No idea, but this is a pain. Word 2007 can be opened and the only way I can open word files in '07 is if I open the '07 program 1st, and then open a document. But, If I try and open from an email attachment, '03 automatically opens the file....even if it is an '07 format.

If you are using XP, you may try yet one more way
1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Select Tools
3. Select Folder Options
4. Select File Types
5. Locate doc
6. Press Change and make the default change to 2007
