Every computer slow down after some time, but if you want to find out whether it is memory problem, try to look at memory utilization. Launch Task Manager, do your usual work (run your often used apps) some time (few hours), and then look at Commit Charge - Peak on Performance tab of Task Manager, if it's close to your installed memory or above it's time to upgrade your memory.
Advice: If you have winxp, 512 MB ram is already not sufficient, try upgrade at least to 1GB. For Vista is ideal 2GB.
