Hello,
1. Have you tried to boot in safe mode?
2. Have you tried inserting your Win Vista disk in, try to boot see if you can repair.

ignore my last reply, something went wrong there. thank you for responding though. when i turn on the pc, i can hear that its doing something but the screen is blank and nothing else seems to be running. i dont have any discs for anything as xp was already on when i bought it. any other ideas?

In most cases, when Windows is preinstalled (OEM), the manufacturer must provide the disks, without them your system loses value for the disk is essential for repair.
In your case, I suggest that you contact the person or store where you purchased the machine and see if you can get the disk or take it in for repair. If the Windows Vista installed on your machine is legitimate, there should not be any problems in getting it.
