Did this problem arrise after anything that you remember? ie have you installed any software recently prior to the malfunction.
sounds like you may need to reinstall some drivers. it may be the function keys are not functioning as multimedia keys. if they work as normal and not in the mode described, you should look to reinstalling the drivers.
Pay a visit to your computer vendor website for drivers if you do not have the install cd.
