Hello,

i have an hp pavillion lap top and it was working fine and to my knowledge nothing happened to it, but i came home tried to turn it on and it does the whole booting up thing and even the welcome screen but after that only a black screen comes up and i can move the cursor, but nothing else will show. please help

Do you have a "windows icon"/start Key on the keyboard? If so what happens when you hit it? If you get the start menu then go to step 2 below.

otherwise:
Try the 3 finger salute (type Ctrl + Alt + Delete all at the same time). If you get a screen - try to logon as another user or add a new user and logon. The 2nd/new user will likely have a desktop to work with.

step 2:

I would then try to do a "System Restore" back to a time well before your problem started.
