Broken screen

i have an HP dv6 , the screen is broken and i want to take the files from the laptop before fixing it . Can i connect it to an external monitor and have a clear view of the screen ? Since with the current screen i cant use the laptop , if i can do it , what is the method ? ,, thxxx
