Invalid Format??

Hi - I am trying to connect my Toshiba laptop to LG TV using HDMI cable - but the TV just says invalid format when I connect.. I connected the cable while both TV and Laptop were off - powered up - TV screen is flashing invalid format. What am I doing wrong?
