Transferring music from computer to phone

Hello,

I have a motorola and im not sure what music files i can put on it. Ive tried mp3s and it says file type not recognized and is there a way to convert mp3s to the correct file type? i have a mac so im not sure if that will complicate things, I am able to connect it to bluetooth and it tries to send the song but wrong file type.
