To do a restore you need an XP installation or restore disc. You say you haven't got one so if you know someone who has an XP disc with the same os as you then you could borrow theres and do not forget to use your product number.
Alternatively you could find a disk on Ebay very reasonable

try system restore from safe mode.

I dont think you will find you can restore factory settings from system restore.
But as jack4rall said If you can open safe mode (tap F8 when turning on) you could cure your problems by selecting a date when you computer was running ok

You said in your first post that your os was XP However the same applies if you want to reinstall Vista you need the Vista disk.
