Moving files from laptop to desktop

Hello, I need to transfer files off my laptop to my desktop..I dont have an external h.d. or any other fancy devices, so it's been impossible thus far. I do have some cables : ethernet , usb, etc. I'm basically useless when it comes to computers, but a step by step would be great. Need to make the transfer soon, laptop has virus (I think) and I need to reformat asap. Please help:)
