Dvd-rw/cd-r drive not detecting

Hello,

I am having problems with the drive detecting blank cd's to burn. I cannot figure it out. It will play the CD's but will not detect blank ones? I am having this same issue on my home laptop. That system is a Windows Vista 64 bit. Any help?
