WHERE THE DELETED DATAT GOES!!!!!!

Hello,
i have a question here that when we delete a data/file then on the hard disk in which form it is and how computer perorm that task.
and if data still on disk then why computer show us free space that we get becoz of deleting that file/data.
PLZ HELLP ME GIVE ME THE ANSWER IN DETAIL

data is not completely erased when we delete any file, it remains there in some portion of our hard drive, but when we delete another data after that one then, previous data is completely removed.
(You an recover data by using system restore option in windows XP)
