Hello,
My kid reset our wireless router by having his laptop hardwired in and it made our network an unsecured network. I called Linksys and they want to charge me to turn the wireless encryption back on! Can I turn it on myself?
Thank You

Hello,

Try this 1.

Better you connect to your router using wired and follow the instructions.
1) Log into your router. Open the browser and enter the IP 192.168.1.1
in the url section and press Enter.
Note : If you failed to login then check your default gateway.

Click on Start --> In search box, type cmd and press Enter.
"Command Prompt" will be opened. Now enter the command
ipconfig ---> Press Enter.
Note down the "Default gateway" and enter that IP in your browser.

2) When it asks you to enter user name and password, enter password as
admin and click on OK (Note: User name is blank). If you failed to login
then enter user name & password as admin and click on OK.

3) Linksys Setup page will be opened. Click on "Wireless" --> Wireless
security. Now select "Security Mode" as "WEP from the drop-down menu.
If your PC supports 128 bit encryption then select "WEP Encryption" as
128 bit or select as 64bit.
Note : The stronger the encryption the better security you will get.

In "Passphrase" enter any phrase or any name and click on "Generate".
Now copy the key 1 in the notepad.

4) Click on Start --> In search box, type ncpa.cpl and press Enter.
"Network Connection" window will be opened. Right click on your wireless
network icon --> Select "Properties". Click on "Wireless Networks" tab.
In the "Preferred Network" section you can find your router names
"linksys". Just select your router in the preferred network and click on
"Properties".

Check the check box(Select the option) "Data Encryption (WEP enabled)"
and uncheck the check box(deselect the option) "The key is provided for
me automatically".

Now enter the key in the "Network key" and "Confirm network key" section.
Note : You have to type the key manually.
Click on OK --> OK.

Now check whether you are able to connect now to your router.
Click on Start --> In search box, type cmd and press Enter.
"Command Prompt" will be opened. Now enter the command
ipconfig ---> Press Enter. You must get the IP Address, Subnet Mask and
Default Gateway.

5) WEP security is not the best one. If you want the stronger security
then, follow the step 3 and in security mode, select "WPA (Pre-Shared
key) --> Let the "WPA Algorithms" be TKIP --> In "WPA Shared Key", enter
any phrase or any name and click on Save settings.

Now click on Start --> In search box, type ncpa.cpl and press Enter.
Right-click on your "Wireless Network" icon and select repair. It will
failed to get connected because preshared key is missing.

Right click on your wireless network icon --> Select "Properties". Click
on "Wireless Networks" tab.

In the "Preferred Network" section you can find your router name set to
automatic as "linksys(Automatic)". Just select your router in the
preferred network and click on "Properties".

In "Association" tab, select "Network Authentication" as "WPA-PSK" from
drop-down menu --> Select "Data Encryption" as "TKIP" from drop-down
menu. Now enter Now enter the key in the "Network key" and "Confirm
network key" section.

Note : You have to type the key manually.

Click on OK --> OK.

Good Luck.
