Hey ya Phoebe..
Well i must laugh because i faced the same problem some weeks ago.
This is due to dust accumulated near the fan. Of course you can find silent fans anywhere.. its cheap and you'll surely be able soon to leave your computer on anythime without any sound nuissance ;) hehe
