Setting up new vaio

Hello, I have a new Z series Vaio, have done the recovery discs and downgraded to XP. Now what? I read to load on security settings first before internet connect, however the USB ports do not recognise my external hard drive, so I can transfer things. I'm not sure what to do now. If someone is happy to put a few steps down for me, I would be really gratefull. Cheers

Just to further clarify. I cannot find the hard drive in the drivers section or in the drivers manager area when I right click on My Computer. If I could find the hard drive I may be right. When I plug other things into the USB ports nothing shows either but looks like they are working as little lights shines on thing I plugged in.
