Thank you for the response. As I'm not at the machine concerned, I can't presently check the various files. I'll reply as soon as I have done the various checks.

I'm writing this from having managed to logg-in into Vista.
What I found was Boot-ini was missing. This I realised when I saw a file called Boot.ini.saved.
I copied and pasted this file then changed the name.
It worked. Now got the system fully upadtes and back to using Vista.
