An external monitor with my HP dv5220us

Hello,
I would like to use an external monitor with my HP pavillion dv5220us. I have the monitor and tried plugging it into my hp notebook and I don't know how to choose to have the picture come to the monitor instead of the notebook screen. The notebook screen is
cracked and hard to use.
