The laptop screen is 1600x900 max. The video chip in the laptop may not support anything larger. Did you check for the max resolution on the laptop? Look for the Nvidia Control Panel to see if you can change the resolution of the external monitor.

Yes, the laptop max resolution is lower than the monitor, but I thought that using a lower resolution would only result in a less crisp image, not a smaller in size image as I am experiencing. I'm pretty sure I'm just not thinking in the right terms. Can you help clarify?

You want the monitor to "scale" the image to the full screen. That option should be in the menu of the monitor. That way you get a full screen but may get fuzziness in the image.
